Applicants must have worked professionally for at least 15 years with substantial national or international achievement in their field, including publications, grants, awards, and/or other signs of achievement. This award is for someone who has never been in residence at VCCA.

About
The Wachtmeister Award, administered by the VCCA Fellows Council, is presented every two years to a prominent artist. The 2027 award is for an interdisciplinary visual artist who has worked professionally for at least 15 years with significant national or international achievement. The award winner will receive a fully-funded VCCA residency of up to 30 days, scheduled between May 1, 2027, and August 31, 2028. This includes an individual studio, a private bedroom with private en-suite bath, and three prepared meals daily. Additionally, the recipient will receive a $1,000 honorarium and a $750 travel stipend. The residency takes place at VCCA's Mt. San Angelo location in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. There is no application fee. Applications will be accepted from February 1 to May 15, 2026.
